Cybersecurity requirements across transportation have arrived mode by mode and at very different speeds. The Coast Guard's marine transportation system rule is final and phased, with assessments, plans, and officer designations due by July 2027. TSA's surface cyber risk management rulemaking remains unfinalized, leaving rail and pipeline operators working from annually renewed security directives. Aviation sits somewhere else again: airport and aircraft operators have been governed since 2023 by emergency amendments to their security programs, with an FAA rulemaking committee developing broader standards on no published timeline.
